Colin Rouse’s Locking photos
Colin said:
"Photos taken during our stay at Locking. In my spare time I occasionally visited the darkroom where Ian Pratt tried, unsuccessfully, to teach me about developing and enlarging. A few of these pictures are the result of my efforts.
"Those of you who have read Tony Beard's piece for the RAFLAA will have noted the use of garages at Weston. One of the photos shows a car which was one of those hidden there. But, we didn't know that our every move was watched from across the road. One dinner time as I prepared to go off camp (I think with Ian Pratt - a motorcycle owner) the cook serving said 'You going to visit your car then?'. Quite a shock. He lived in the flats opposite the garages.
"A few of the photos show my efforts at photo manipulation the old way. A couple of photos taken with flash in the bunk at the end of the hut were enlarged and became passport photos for our trip to Europe and the Rhine. Another photo shows my experiment in enlargement. It was taken in Weston from the Locking Road looking towards the hill between Weston and Sand Bay. On top of the hill was a white house with a tower. With no zoom or telephoto lens the original shot showed the tower as a small point in a sea of houses. Not a bad enlargement then!"
